Today we're recording from Lutra Witter. I pay my respects to elders, past and present, and I acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. I am of the Beer Pai people, and I'm proud to use my voice to honor the strength, stories, and resilience of my ancestors, whose culture has continued for more than 65,000 years, because it always was and always will be Aboriginal land.

unknown

It's Christy Bitch.

SPEAKER_00

She's the former home and away star who shone in Summer Babe for more than 500 episodes. But after her time by the beach came to an end, Christy Hayes found another passion behind the mic.

SPEAKER_03

Prime Minister, what does your government feel about that? Will we see this Royal Commission?

SPEAKER_02

There's calls for Royal Commission about everything.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I think deaths of women are pretty paramount in their day, but you gotta work out.

SPEAKER_02

What does a Royal Commission do besides fund lawyers?

SPEAKER_03

Bless happy Justin. But he brought home something yesterday, and it's those beautiful iced bulbs, you know, the beautiful whiskey. Ice over. It is the world that I see the way he is so different. And I think that the world needs to be more patient with people that live with autism. Any parent out there knows what it's like to have an autistic child. There are wonderful days, but there's also really hard days. It's Christy Bitch. Hello, good morning. Uh, this is a little bit different because you might have been listening along now for the last couple of years to me with someone else wonderful whose name is Dan. For those of you new to the show, hi, thanks for being here. I'm Christy. Christy Bitch. No, I'm kidding, I'm not actually a bitch. I'm a nice person. But I've got another great guy here with me because I needed someone to come along for the ride. And uh ironically, I have ridden him a few times as well. This is my husband Justin. Hello, hello, sweetheart.

SPEAKER_01

Hello. Uh I like this coming along for the ride because you needed somebody to do some stuff for you, basically.

SPEAKER_03

And by some things, you've done everything, everything tech. Uh, the logo that you can see for the show Justin made. Uh, Justin is like a tech uh whiz. Justin has worked in radio for many years too, and I'm very grateful that not only is he my husband, but my now co-host of this show. Um, Hubby Justin is an incredible guy, very green flag.

SPEAKER_01

I'll slip in and out.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So to speak. Um, this is the show that is very, very much about empowering women. Very glad uh for the men that are here too. Thank you for the great guys that do follow me. There's the not all men's and the whataboutisms, but we'll get to that throughout the course of this show. I just wanted to jump behind the microphone now and do what I feel I do best, which is uh connect with people and engage with listeners, which I have done for many years on the radio, but throughout the time that I've, you know, had a career in the media, and I just honestly, it's my favorite thing about uh career is the connection that you make along the way. So whether that's acting, whether that's radioing or now podcasting, whatever it is, I just want to hang out with you and and hang out with the people that I love and bring along some cool people for this right. So we're gonna have a great time on this show. Things that are important to myself and also my husband, and not because they're important to me, but are important to him too. Uh things that we stand for, aren't they, darling, which is rights for people with autism, IVF, challenging prime ministers, for instance, uh men that are in power making decisions for women, and you're very green flaggy. I want our wonderful listeners to know that.

SPEAKER_01

So is that a good thing? Green flag's a good thing, isn't it?

SPEAKER_03

Oh my god, you're so like you're so old, babe. I mean, I'm a millennial, but what are you technically? You're uh you're not a boomer. I'm not a boomer. Jesus, thank God.

SPEAKER_01

Is it Gen X?

SPEAKER_03

Yes, you're a Gen X.

SPEAKER_01

Gen X.

SPEAKER_03

He's like 10 years older than I am, and that's cool. He's still very young at heart, but with that becomes a lot of uh lived uh experience, life experience that you have. And even before you and I were a couple and before we were husband and wife, I really liked the the things that you would stand for in terms of I remember a conversation we once had, which is when you were telling me that you were very in favour of empowered women.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And you I like that about you. I like that a lot about you.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, I think it's important. Look, it it's empowering women doesn't take away your own power or your own masculinity. I like you know what? It's I some of the smartest, most you know, greatest people that I've worked with there, you know, in my life in i in so many forms, in so many different places, have all been women. I've always looked up to, you know, and I think it's really important. And I you you talked about the before, you mentioned the whole it's not all men, it's not all this, you know. It's it's I think people need to realise that I think what I just said before is empowering women is not depowering men in any way or demasculating men in any way, shape, or form. Um we've all got like when we've got a little girl, you know, we've got a daughter who we want to grow up to be the most powerful, powerful woman on the planet. So we've got to we've got to set examples there.

SPEAKER_03

We do, and I think as well, which is really good, is more men need to talk about that. The way that you just very eloquently did. I had a comment on my Instagram uh the night before last because a woman that I follow on Instagram was horrifically uh abused by an ex- partner, right? And I want to remind you that 1-800 respect is available if you need support. Uh and and I commented something about that, just saying, oh my god, he's everything that is wrong with men, right? Just as I would have commented, oh, that person is everything that is right with a man if it was a wonderful thing that a guy was doing, you know. Um, and this man felt the need to jump in and point out to me that he's never done that, that in his culture he does everything for his uh partner and his for his daughter. And all those things are wonderful and stuff, but it was basically a not all men. And I commented to him and I said, I know it's not all men that do that. I never said that you did, you didn't need to clarify otherwise. And maybe I was a little bit rude, but it gets to the point now where this whole thing of jumping in to clarify when sometimes guys get personally triggered is is so basic and we don't need that anymore. So I'm looking forward to continuing this.

SPEAKER_01

It's human nature, I think, for people to jump on the defensive a lot. Um, but you've got to jump on the defensive at the right time and and for the right things. You know, stop, take a breath, you know, have a have an actual look at what the comment is before you have your knee-jack reaction and keyboard warrior your way through these things. It is frustrating. It's frustrating, you know. I'm gonna use the it's not all men thing here, because it's frustrating as a man seeing men come out and actually do that because Well, you've never done it.

SPEAKER_03

You have never done it, and you would never do that ever. It goes without saying.

SPEAKER_01

You know, it yeah, it it's it's a time it's the time where we live at the moment, and I I just I just think it's a real shame, and I just uh really want, you know, I'm very big on uh hopefully leading by example in this, you know, in this space. Um, you know, just listen, accept, you know, understand what what is happening. We're we're in a world that's changing now, and for the better in this scenario, it is it's certainly not uh, you know, not at a stage where it needs to be as far as equality and as far as women's safety and as far as all these sorts of things. And um, you know, we're not there yet, but hopefully we're trending in the right direction.

SPEAKER_03

Well, that would be good, hopefully. I'm impressed that you said the word trending, by the way. Yeah, like a young person.

SPEAKER_01

I've just I listened, uh I I just Googled a few different words that I could throw into this podcast to make me sound ten years younger than I absolutely am.

SPEAKER_03

But what about though, like, um on a more serious note, when we had that moment when my, you know, my former radio co-star and I, Dan, when we were on the air together and a lot of Australians saw this when we challenged the Prime Minister about the femicide crisis that we have in a royal commission. What about some of the messages I would tell? Like, I would be laying in bed with my husband, and I would get messages from guys like saying that I deserved like some really horrific stuff, right? And we just let it slide. A, we're too busy. Yeah. I mean, when parenting three kids, we have a newborn daughter, she's well, she's eight months old now. Um, we have a highly autistic 11-year-old, and so life goes on. But some of the crap that we have together collectively as husband and wife seen as well for a lot of um people that that speak up has been something that we've really witnessed in detail. So we'll keep talking about all of that.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, it's can can we touch on that for a second? Like on this on this topic for a and we're talking about the femicide and the and the problem. And the problem is, and this is where um where the men have jumped in in the wrong way, and this is a lot of the it's not all men. And nobody has said it's all men, and nobody said that men don't you know aren't in bad situations themselves at times, but that is not the issue at hand. It's not it's the issue at hand at the moment is the amount of women that are dying at the hands of men in Australia on a daily and weekly basis, and that is the issue uh at hand, and this is where we need to stop and go, okay, there are other issues that need to be addressed, but that's not the issue we're addressing right now. The issue we're addressing at the moment is femicide, and that needs to be fixed. And that was with you you I mean, with the um your chat with the Prime Minister, and obviously it was something that went nationally and actually probably globally in the way you know in the way that you handled it. Um the way that you handled it was fantastic, but the way that he handled it was atrocious. It was very, very flippant and appalling and and just absolutely not looking at what the issue uh what the issue actually is. And and when you've got the leader of the country getting lost on a subject like that, where do we where do we stand, you know, in actually improving it?

SPEAKER_03

He is the man that should be leading in space.

SPEAKER_01

He should be absolutely should be.

SPEAKER_03

He should be as comfortable with his conversation as what he is about asking his wife whether she wants red or white with dinner. You know what I mean? Like it should be he should be easily comfortably able to speak about that. And you're right, and like from your point of view, um all the stuff that we talked about that he said off the air, my god, I wish we could elaborate on that. Like I've told Justin um things that he said, which just reiterated our stance of, oh my god, you are so flippant and appalling with this. But even putting aside um the politicians, even pulling aside, you know, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, um, who I don't think expected that chat to go like that that day, um it is a separate issue just because and we don't minimize it. Yes, of course, there are men out there that are uh in situations where they are in in a in a minority situation where women are abusing them and that's terrible, and we don't look away from that, of course. But a woman uh is being murdered in Australia weekly, daily, every four days. It's horrific statistics. So this series is not just about femicide, of course, but it's something that is not lost on us, and uh with all the messages that I receive over the years and um of the last time as well. Please know that this is a safe space for us to keep chatting about all these things. Um, and of course, our beautiful IVF baby girl Goldie, Mary Goldie. We went on that journey too, and and everything that we've done. I mean, Justin and I worked in radio together, which is what brought us together. Justin is a radio guru and a really great guy. And I say guru because guru because he's gonna gurus. You're not that old, babe.

SPEAKER_01

No, I'm not old. I don't think that I don't feel old at all.

SPEAKER_03

Well, I you know what? I used to stress, I'm like, oh my god, he's so much older than me, but that's okay. Like the older I get, the older he gets. But I think the older that we get, the stronger that we get. And uh, and everyone relates to this, particularly the girls listening to the show now, and the great guys, of course.

SPEAKER_01

You're not allowed to be old at the moment. We've got a you know, we've got an eight-month-old daughter, so we have no choice. We have no choice. We have to be young and vibrant and up and about. So that that's what we choose to do, and you know, that's where we're at.

SPEAKER_03

That's where we're at. And he does want to go again. We do have another little egg on ice, and that's been another thing for us too. We're like, should we should we do this transfer? Should we not do this transfer? And anyone who's gone through IVF knows how friggin' horrible it is at times.

SPEAKER_01

Look, we got our miracle with Goldie. We did, and we and that's it, and and we're not greedy, we're not this, but at the same time, yes, we do have a uh an embryo that's sitting there that would just be a shame not to have a try.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. I dare not risk it. I'm scared. I'm scared of things that can go wrong. I'm scared of things that that can go right. It's scary when you think to yourself, should I put myself in a position where we could luck out again? Can I handle pregnancy? That's another thing. I mean, I got friggin' tossed.

SPEAKER_01

I handled it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Yeah. You had a lot to endure. Hi, babe. You had to make me food sometimes, you had to go buy me lemonade, you got to sit there and breathe. I mean, Jesus Christ, I had gestational diabetes. You did. What was the other thing I had? Polyhydrominos. Yeah. And I'm waddling around, like trying to be able to breathe and and carry this baby. I mean, how's it?

SPEAKER_01

Okay, let's point this. Let's let's explain uh what this is. So they say the average um the the the average embryo embryo fluid, if if I'm using the right terms here. It's probably not yeah, um, that that a woman would have in a pregnancy averages around 300 mils. Okay, that's what they say about 300 mils, maybe up to half a litre. You had three litres.

SPEAKER_03

Jesus Christ, liquid shamer. Yes, all right.

SPEAKER_01

No, but I'm not big. No, it's not your fault. Like it's this is the thing. It was a little bit more. Okay, baby fault. But it's um but no, it wasn't your fault with that. But what I'm saying is uh, you know, anyone out there going that's tough to walk around. It's tough enough to walk around, I would imagine, being a pregnant uh, you know, a pregnant woman with uh, you know, with the normal amount of fluid. Um so it was I could see how hard it was for you. But you you're a trooper, you actually did. You you did you're you're yeah, you're a fantastic trooper through the whole pregnancy thing.

SPEAKER_03

Thank you, and so are you. I know it was very hard. No, but he was. Everyone needs that support person, my God. I take my hat off to people that do it alone. Like I I have seen women who have done the whole, and I have such immense respect for this, have said, you know what, my time is now. I'm not gonna wait to meet the right partner. I want to have my baby, or I'm gonna at least try to have my baby. And any single parent out there, don't we, Justin? We take our hat off to them. We say, How, how do you do it? It's hard enough with us too. It's hard enough when you've got help, and we've got help. I I look at single parents and I honestly just bow down to bow down to them. I mean, I was a single parent for like two days because Justin had to go away and um it was like it was very hard with the channel. It was a day and a half. It nearly killed me.

SPEAKER_01

It was so did the text messages when I kept getting. I was on a flight with Wi-Fi, so it didn't even stop.

SPEAKER_03

It's really hard, but you know, it's all beautiful, isn't it? Parenting, beautiful. Will we have that next baby? We'll have to wait and see, I suppose. But there's a lot about our family that we're proud of, a lot of stuff that we're working through. But this show is going to represent a lot of things that I'm passionate about. And I'm also great guests along the way.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I'm gonna get Husie on the show. So Hughesy has been very vocal of late, even with his NDIS stance, right? Now, if you haven't uh heard that, uh Husie has been saying that the NDIS, for those of you that might have a child with disability, or perhaps yourself, or caring with someone with with disability also his stance is it's funding criminals. Yes, he Justin and I, because I have a great relationship with Husie. I mean, he might not, yeah, he wouldn't know me from a bar of soap, but I mean when I've spoken to him previously on radio, he was very nice to us. I don't know if he'd know my actual name or whatever, but um but looking forward to having a chat with him. But yeah, to hear that because you and I went, whoa, we uh we we rely on NDIS funding for Handy for our boy, like Handy needs support workers and speech therapy and OT therapy. Um and it's been a huge big thing, right? I'm curious to know why he thinks that. I recognise a lot of look, there are issues with the NDIS system.

SPEAKER_01

There absolutely is issues with the NDIS system, and we see it, and you know, it's not a you know, it's not a new thing. We you know, ever since this whole system came in, it it did allow for some unscrupulous unscrupulous you know the word I'm gonna do. Um people trying to actually you know well that we you know taking advantage of it. But at the same time, then it makes us very nervous as well, too, because we we have to deal with the NDIS. Um you know, and without it, we would be screwed.

SPEAKER_03

Absolutely, and so would a lot of people. I mean, so maybe that's something throughout the course of this series as well we're gonna explore. I want to hold people to account that make uh decisions in people's lives. Maybe they will chat on the show, maybe they will not. I would very much like to sit down with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Uh I don't like our chances because we're broadcasting right now from a caravan. Um, but as the show goes on and on and on, there are people that um I can't wait to introduce you to hubby Justin feels exactly the same, and he's gonna be a wonderful support along the course of this journey, and you're gonna love getting to know him like I love him. But mostly we're just so grateful that you're here right now, um, downloading this episode. I'm gonna keep it short and sweet. We don't need to save the world today. Just wanted to say good morning, welcome, good night, wherever you're listening to us, and let you know that this show is gonna be out every single day, uh, first thing in the morning. Got a lot to say. Can't wait to tell you a lot of the stories of people that I've met along the way in in acting, want to chat about um television, what we want to do next.

SPEAKER_01

And get in touch too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, get in touch, absolutely. So at Christy Hayes underscore is my Instagram. Um, this show has a wonderful agent in Matt Batten. And uh don't be scared just to reach out directly. I want to talk to you. And that's one thing that I really pride myself on doing in my work is just being authentic and just having real conversations, chats that you want to have too, and not shying away from things that are important, particularly to us girls, but even down to things like renovations. I mean, I could talk about that all day. Don't worry, we won't in this in this episode.

SPEAKER_01

But whatever you're going through in your life, we've got to wrap up soon because I've got to go and paint the kitchen.

SPEAKER_03

Christy Angel.
