Dan and Christie Podcast. Happy Friday, everyone. It is Dan and Christie here, and it is unfortunately, um, let's just say it straight off the bat, uh, the last time we're doing this podcast because I've got a job at the ABC in northern Tasmania, and they said no longer can you podcast, it's a conflict of interest. So um, it's sad. This has been going for what, a month? How many episodes have we had? Do you know?

Yes, I do. Oh, I thought you would. Well, you know, maths is not my thing, but it'll work out that we will have done 30 episodes together over the course of five weeks. Um, so yeah, we knew about this a couple of days ago, and we we wanted to keep going as a duo, but you know, I'm so proud of Dan. He had this amazing opportunity come up, and and obviously when you work for something as esteemed and prestigious for the ABC, which we love for you, um, you know, I I was holding out hope that you could still keep doing our podcast, but then I thought, oh um, maybe they won't let you, just the places that we go as well. Like, you know, um, there is a highbrow component to the ABC, and you know, when I brought up um the sex positions that, you know, my own. Well, there's no point with that, I thought.

We're not really the higherfalutin types, are we, you and I? Um I don't even know how I'm gonna do it, but um, yeah, I'll be on from four till six. Uh so I officially start. Uh I've already started as this podcast is going to air. I've started my first day. Um so uh it's exciting, it's good to be back in Lonceston. It's great for my family, it's longevity. I'm really looking forward to sinking my teeth into the northern part of the state. I absolutely adore Lonceston. And even like, you know, you broadcast all the way to Smithton.

Uh you know, you've been there. Cradle Mountain's lovely. You didn't actually see it or anything. But dries the bone, there was no snow.

And ironically, snow everywhere. Uh when we left Cradle Mountain. Yeah. But um, oh my god, it you it's so beautiful there, and you deserve all these great things, but it's weird to think now that we're officially ending, like you and I won't be able to do this podcast together, and we'll I'll keep doing like a podcast by myself and get Hubber Justin on sometimes.

Well, I was thinking about us. Um now this sounds weird, but I was thinking about us in the shower this morning when I was getting ready because I was like, how do you like it's weird, so much to say. And I was really sad, but um but mostly just so happy for you. I mean, neither of us are dying. We're gonna send each other voice notes.

Man, he was an idiot. He was a real knob. Uh, but we enjoyed uh hanging around him. Yeah, this will be my uh yeah eulogy, and uh I'll say goodbye to myself. Dan, you've been wonderful. What a ride you've been on.

Oh, and it has been a ride though. Like, you know when you move house, which is such a nice hole of a job, you move house, you you empty out the house, and just before you hand the keys back, you look at the empty house and you have all the memories of when you enjoyed that place. Just say it was a home that you actually enjoyed, yeah. And you look around and you think, oh, that's right, this happened, this happened. It's kind of how I feel now with us today as we're recording this episode. Like, I don't know, I guess um the hype room that we're in. The hype room that we're in, which looks beautiful in this.

I know beautiful. Well, that's what it's like. It comes down to all the memories that you made together, and looking at that um, you know, the euphemism of an empty home now because we're both kind of fleeing the nest, like but we had such beautiful times together over the last four years, and we built so much together. And this is gonna be a lot for people to process. People are gonna miss you so much as I will. And so we can't. Or they're not.

You love a top five, right? And that's what I thought I could do today for you. Is I was thinking of top five moments that I had with you, and which was really hard to do. Like, how do you even summarize the relationship of so many years with your best friend, like on the radio together, off the radio together, on our podcast together. Now, now I'm off the podcast. Um, but I did write a little list.

Okay, it's not as good as your goodbye my my co-host song that you sang by James Blunt. He's such a whimsical man, isn't he? Like it's such a weird, just uh pussy of a song, but I love it like so much.

It was so beautiful. Like, so the last day Dad and I were on the radio together um at our old uh network, he sang that song to me, and there was not a dry heart, a dry eye in the house. I mean, we were crying all morning anyway, and all all the listeners, our beautiful listeners were crying. Hobby Justin was sobbing when he heard you sing that. Oh, really? Oh, yeah, he said, because you've got a beautiful voice, and like it was funny, but it was so touching as well. Like you managed to hit both humour and heart. Um, and so it made me really emotional. But but this list that I was thinking of this morning, again, like I said, that empty house where you're reflecting all the happy times. I actually felt just so happy for you because this was like a now something I believe like the universe is for some whatever reason is partying us now, and you're gonna go and kick ass at ABC in Northern Tasmania, you're gonna make a difference to an entire plateau of huge amounts of community and change lives and do what you do best, which is be on the radio and sing more James Blunt.

So the number one top five memories of Dan, which is very hard again to summarise because you know, Dan's one of the people I love most in this whole wide world. Uh and it's not flat, by the way, I'm like some absolute dickhead that messaged me that the other day, but that's a different story. Um, on Instagram, and ironically, my first memories of you on Instagram because when Dan and I found out we were going to do a radio demo together, I got a beautiful message from uh a guy, and I'm like, oh, who's this? Because it was really sweet. And I see this photo of a guy, and I think he was on stage in his profile picture with a guitar. Um, and I realized it was Dan, the guy that I knew was a comedian in Tasmania, and I was about to a radio demo with, and he sent me the most beautiful message when he slid into my DMs in the most lovely safe space way, and it was just a hey Christie, looking forward to catching up when we do our radio demo together. Um, it's gonna be great, or something really nice, love Dan. And I thought, oh my god, immediately, like I know it's a little thing, but I thought he was so sweet and really considerate. And I don't know, anyone who knows out there what it's like to start a new job, to have someone reach out to you and make you feel welcome. Yeah, because that's what you've always done, is always made me feel welcome.

And a hug, like as zero, yeah. Chuck in a couple of things. Yeah, there was an emoji and a couple of yeah, water drips. That was for Justin. Yeah. Oh, well, yeah, it was a nice thing because I was I think I was driving to like I I didn't tell anyone at work. I was working at Chili FM and I didn't tell anyone I was demoing for a different uh show, and I stopped at Campbell Town. I remember giving you a call and just calling it Take a Shit Town, and you just laughed, and I'm like, well, this we're gonna get along fine because that's the worst joke I've ever made. Oh, it was great, yeah.

Cracked me up. I was like, this guy's awesome. That's funny, that was number number two on the list was the log at Campbell Town. That was when you stopped to take a shit. No, I it was when we yeah, when um so Dan had to drive like an hour and a half to get to the radio station to jump um on the microphone, and I was in uh up in the central coast just up past Sydney, and I was at a different place. So Dan and I had to um do what's called in radio a demo together where you record together and essentially do what you're doing right now and you hear us together and to see if we worked. And I remember you and I just had the most fun when we demoed and we were so comfortable together, and we just went into these fun places when I thought, oh my god, I really love this guy, he's so talented, he's so sweet, he's so funny. Like, I could not believe how funny you were. I mean, I could believe it because it's your thing, but it still hasn't happened.

So um, this is the first time I'm hearing this, so uh, I don't believe in any of the things you're saying, but thank you. Appreciate it. But I I remember like just our laughter during that. So, because you do get sometimes in radio, you just put with someone and you're just like, hey, make some great radio, and it doesn't always work, like it's chemistry. It's like just going, uh, this mixes with this. Let's put uh Pepsi with uh let's say ice cream, see if that works, make a spider. That actually sounds pretty good. Sounds pretty good. Yeah, I mean that works.

I'm a little bit arachnophobic, so I wouldn't drink that spider. But um, but yeah, like sometimes you mix with people and you make a ghoul ash, and uh that's what we did. We just immediately, I'm just like, and I knew I said to the boss, Phil, like who eventually was our boss, I said, that's the person that we're getting. Uh and he's like, Yeah, sure, no worries. And it was done. Like it literally minutes after we had a chat.

Oh, well, you know what? Like, because you have worked in radio for so many years and you've worked with people that haven't been so nice, and a lot of people know what it's like when you work in the environment um and people are really mean to you, like no matter what your job is. If you go to work and you have a terrible day with people who are unkind or don't value you, it's a terrible feeling. It is, it is, isn't it? But when you spend time together with someone that you just love and adore and have fun with, like you just think to yourself, My God, how lucky am I?

Yeah, and that's it, and you're pure sunshine, and that's the first thing, like even from our first chat. I'm like, you are you're just this uh shining light, and um and it's been just a pleasure to be around you for those four years. I don't think we ever fought.

Uh maybe we did over a little uh in the beginning, maybe not fought, just found our feet with and we were also under a lot of pressure, and we won't name names about some dramas that we had. No, no, God no, no, no, we um no, we've never had a fight. Only in the beginning when we got to know each other did we try and figure out like what we needed to how we were gonna do the show. Yeah. We never fought. We never had fought. What would we fight about?

I don't know. Um your husband just over him, usually. Uh who gets to, you know, see his package. His spider. His spider. Yes. There's a bigger rach near Dan there. That's why I call him Daddy. Long legs, because he's got a third leg and it's massive. Jake the peg. Um, what else is on that list?

We've had a lot of coffees, but the first time, this is how sweet Dan is, right? So I had to move away from my family when Dan and I started to work together because our radio show initially was based in Tasmania, and so that's where I moved down. And Dan, because I didn't have a car, Dan would come and pick me up every single day for nine months. He picked me up, he drive drove me home. Um, he would never take like petrol money or anything like that. Hopefully, I offered enough.

You did, you kept on offering 10 bucks. I'm like, no, no, there's no point. It was like that's not even gonna give me like any petrol anyway. So it's like you know, you you've seen the price of petrol, right? I'm like 10 bucks is like you know, it's not even half a litre. It's like baby. It's like no, no need to, no, no, and I was going that way like I lived 30 seconds away from you. So I'm like, I'll get I'll get you every moment.

That was so sweet. But you did you did that for us every day. And um, the first time I met Dan, Dan had even brought me a coffee. And I know it like it was a little thing on the list because it was so hard to think about all the moments that just you know would shine a light on what a beautiful, amazing human being you are, and how tremendous you've been of my my best friend, how much I miss you. But that was because I still remember the moment, like I was standing outside, it was freezing cold, yeah, and I just saw this lovely guy walking toward me and he was holding a coffee, and I went, Oh, I you know, you look so nice and normal, and and you are, um, and and you were so sweet, and he said, This is for you. Like, can you imagine a someone newer that you're working with picking you up for work, bringing you a coffee, not taking petrol money, just being so sweet and kind of.

But the coffee was a blend for three, which you were really disappointed with. I mean, the fact that Nes Cafe uh stuffed it up 42 times and then stuffed it up a 43rd time and still put it out there, yeah. No, but you needed it at that time, like because we're getting up at four o'clock in the morning, and it is freezing cold, like it's depressing, and so you're like, you need to pick me up, and you need uh a reason to go into work, and coffee's quite often for us, were it. And quite often we'd be in the drive-thru of Maccas every morning, and you just yell shit at me like from behind. Get a sh play, like, yeah, call me a fuckhead.

No, but let's tell people now. We're not on the radio, right? Yeah, so this is like a running joke between Dan and I, which we never got to do on air, obviously, because you know you couldn't say this on the air. Um, if there's kids in the car, we're about to swear I'm so sorry, but you know, it's our last show, so fuckhead. Um, my son Harley's here while we're recording a different room. Um, so we're at the kitchen one day at our radio show, right? And Dan and I have this thing of calling each other fuckhead when we're off air. Today, fuckhead. Said with a nice way, yeah. Said with really like lots of love and sincerity. Anyway, it's like 5 30 in the morning, one morning at our old radio station, and I walk into the works kitchen, and I think that's because no one's ever there at that time, except Dan and our producer Matt. I know it's not producer Matt because producer Maddie is so tall and I've seen him as I've walked in, so I assume it's Dan. So I just walk in really loudly and I just say G'day, fuckhead.

Yeah, and it's probably like uh one of the reporters from channel seven, and you're like, not me at all. No one of them made me redundant. Yeah.

I walked in, I'm like, get a fuckhead. And um, oh my god, I'm still triggered and traumated when I remembered that because this poor dude looked up and I went, I'm so sorry I thought you were Dan. I'm so sorry I would never call you a fuckhead. And I accidentally kept saying it. You know what it's like when you're trying to backpedal. And I walked in.

Like so sometimes you'd walk into the kitchen and you're like, oh, I'm having awkward conversations with people, but that's a good icebreaker, I think. And are you gonna are you gonna um because you are so talented and the story you told me when you were on two radio stations at once, right? That's right, yeah. You had, you know, the the funky young Dan persona, and then you were next door.

That's right, it was Power FM Ballarat and 3BA, which are very different radio stations. One's like the 80s, 90s, and today, and the others is like top 40 stuff. So like they had me on at the same time. So I was Dan on Power FM and then Daniel on 3BA talking to, you know, probably uh someone from the council kind of thing about bin night. I'm like uh Daniel here on 3BA and uh Johnny Cooges in the next five. And I just put on this persona like this of all the radio announcers I'd heard in the 90s, uh, on 7BU. I'm Peter Upton, that kind of thing. See how good you're and um yeah, I just pretended to be him, and it was so easy to do. So yeah, I could put on that Daniel persona. Can you do it? What's up, Daniel Taylor? Yeah, yeah. It's ABC Northern Drive. We've got simply red in the next 10. I'd love to root him. I better not say that.

We're on FM up north too, like not the AM, because I heard the AM for the first time in Hobart. I'm like, it's a bit different. Just the sound, really. Sounds like you're in a tin can. It's like they're using a string and a tin can. So um, yeah, it's uh gonna be great, I think. Uh I can't wait for it. Um, it's gonna be very different. I realise how much hard work I'm going to have to do now. Not just us at work, just laughing at us, not us talking about our day, and then just having nine minutes worth of ads, and then Taylor Swift again, fate of aphilia.

Well, actually, there was two more, but this one was really special. I I remember when you and I went to Victoria together. Because that's one thing we loved so much about being on air, right? And even now with our potty, which we've tried to encapsulate, was um making a difference, right? So remember when we went to Victoria together, we had our own little holiday together. You can tell everyone what it was about, but um, that was definitely one of the highlights of me of our time together because we went to Victoria together for five days to every single um uh region that we broadcast in on the on the air. So we flew to Melbourne and then we got in a high car, didn't we?

That's right. Uh Royal McDonald House charities raising money all across uh the state of Victoria. So uh we did drive straight to Mildura, and that's like a six and a half hour drive. Yeah, Danny. And you said you saw snakes the whole way, and I'm like, these are truck type and like or sticks. Like they're not snakes. You're like, oh my god, there's more snakes on the side of the road. I'm like, yeah, there's thousands of snakes.

That's what I thought though. Yeah, because it was so friggin' hot, because we went up in November of 2024. It would have been, yeah. Yeah, um, to do like a Ronald McDonald House charity tour, if you will. We went to to the house in Hobart, and then we went up to we went to Melbourne, and then we had to drive up to Muldira. And every time we were driving on the road, like I s I swear on my children's lives, like I swear on snakes everywhere. I swear there were snakes on the road because it was so hot, and I just remember thinking, oh my god, this is so freaking hot, and there's snakes. But then I went, This is actually so freaking cool. Here I am with my best friend um with the work company credit card, and no one else from our station came with us. No, no, it was just me and Dan. Um, and we went to the first station too, and um that we were broadcasting from McDonald's, weren't we?

Yeah, with Lee Culbert, uh who is a Geelong superstar slash kangaroos uh legend of AFL, and he's such a good guy, like and and we got such a good experience from those people. Like going to these stations, we'd never like we're broadcasting to, but we'd never been to, and and they treated us so well everywhere. Bendigo was amazing too. Shepherd didn't like us as much, but um, you know, Aubrey was really lovely, like all the sales team came out, the general manager, and they came and said good day, and it was really nice uh because like you broadcast into these areas and you don't know what you mean to these places until you go to them. And it was really surprising to see that like we had fans all through Country Victoria, like in and you don't think about that as you're broadcasting every day. But um, but like even on our last show, we had a lot of those people call through like brand new numbers calling through saying, Hey, you guys kept me company as I'm driving into Melbourne, like for three hours every single day, heard your show, loved you guys. So you meant a lot to us, and and just keeping them company, just knowing that, like it's a small thing, but it means so much to us. Um, but yeah, it was uh that was a great memory. Like I think that was our most rewarding part is raising so much money for kids in hospitals and their families, uh, like having a home away from home, and and that meant so much to us too. Like we raised about 10 grand um for those families, which is great, it is many nights accommodation for them.

Oh, that's right. Hey, like because when we were there, we asked everyone humbly in the beginning, didn't we? We said um, because we go and do our show from local McDonald's um at all these beautiful areas, and we said, Oh, look, if you can come out and if you can give a few bucks, that would be great. And we had the donation tins and you we'd rattle them on the microphone. And before we knew it, right, even when we'd sometimes at different places arrived, there were like hundreds of people came out to give money, didn't they? Yeah, so generous, so generous, like to come out and just give what they could. Some people were giving like notes, 20 bucks, a hundred bucks. Remember we had that guy who donated like five hundred dollars. Yeah, and we even said to him, excuse me, sir, can do you know, can we put you on air just for a second just to thank you? And he didn't even want any praise, he just got back. I think it was a rich truckie, right? Yeah, and um just in high veers, yeah.

Here you go, take it. And he and he left. Um, and so we were like, oh my goodness, like all these walks of life, all these different moments, but everyone did the right thing for for the kids and their families because Ronald McDonald House just do the most phenomenal work. Like, even when it comes down to because people go, Oh, what do they spend the money on? And most people don't say that, but you know, for people who are just genuinely asking, I mean, it gives, you know, accommodation right next to the hospital, they have to pay for electricity, they have to feed the family staying with them. Like, they really do give you a home away from home, hey.

Yeah, oh they do. And the Royal in Melbourne um have uh Royal MacDonald House right next to them and uh just to see those kids and what they're going through. Like no one uh deserves what they're they're going through every day, and it's heartbreaking. But it was so nice to put a smile on their face, you know, when we had Grimace there, we had like lots of macas to give away. Um, we we gave someone a thousand dollars uh with alpha bucks too that day, and literally we can say it now. Yeah, I just gave her the answers. She did because I'm like, Well, you you are going through hell with your little kid here, and I'm just like, these are the answers. And she almost stuffed it up too. She was running out of time.

I'm almost like I know, that's what happened. We don't work there, we can say it now, right? The the questions are written down for us with the answers, right? And we're there playing Alpha Bucks live um at the at the Ronald McDonald House.

And you were showing this family didn't deserve that thousand dollars.

They needed this money, they were going through hell. We were like, if there's one productive thing we can do today, it's to try and help this beautiful family just win a bit of money. And and like she was playing well anyway, and we were just like, Okay, here's the paper. Just put it, just say that, just say that, please. Um, yeah, I mean, corporations have lots of money, it's no skin off their nose, it didn't make a difference to them, but it certainly made a difference to that family, and it did. You know, that's the stuff. And I do it again. And you do it again. We stand by that, yeah. And um, oh my god, like so those things where we um we really got to interact with everyone and be together and see the world and have all these beautiful memories was incredible. And I did have one little thing on the list, which is uh I wouldn't say it tops what we just spoke about, but I still remember it being such a beautiful moment with you and I was when I told you that I was finally pregnant with Goldie after four years of doing IVF.

Oh my god, yeah, you'd been through hell, like honestly, and and that is one of the greatest moments of my life, like regardless of radio, regardless of all that stuff. Like, you know, you telling me that was there's so much joy, and and you know, I'll never forget that moment. And and I I think I just took off the headphones because I'm like, well, we're just two people now. Like this is my best friend telling me, you know, it's what you've always wanted. Like it is as soon as I met you, like you know, you talk about it every day. You're just like me and my husband, we just need this miracle in our lives, and we're trying and trying. And um, and there was so much heartbreak during that time, and um, I was so happy for you both, and and still to this day, like Goldie's my favourite person, and and your kids, like both your boys, Harley Hendrix. Love your family, and um, and and it's brilliant, and you are such a beautiful unit now, but like that moment is uh one of the all-time greats. Um, it'll be a highlight of my life and something I'll never forget. And um, you know, it's and it's sad. Like, I'll I'll always be part of your lives. I'll keep on coming down and seeing Goldie every day. Like seeing her smile just brings a smile to my face, and she's hilarious, she's great, she's so placid, and she's she's an angel on earth, like she really is.

It'd be like he know I do as well.

It was just very fun, like and what he had to do every day. He had to go to like a clinic and just give samples all the time. I know, but but if it wasn't for Dan, like Dan got us through such a hard time. That's what Dan does for his friends, the most beautiful soul. Like, I can't express to you how loving and kind and amazing Dan is. I mean, you know how much he is these things because that's why you've listened to us for all these years on the air, but um, but but to be able to say to my best friend to after everything he did, going through his own stuff in his own life, you know, would always just be so encouraging and supportive and supportive to our listeners for people who were as well going through it and really hard times. IVF is so hard for people, it's really hard on the person trying to get pregnant. It's really hard on the partner of the person trying to get pregnant, you know. It's really traditionally speaking, um, you know, with with couples, it's really hard for men as well, which we don't get talked about enough, like for the for sometimes the partner just feels helpless as well. And like, you know, you were such a beautiful support for everyone that felt alone. But you know, as you can see, could talk about it all day, and maybe in another time and space we will.

But we've had the best time. Uh do you have a camera small enough for that? Like here in the Hype TV studio? Well, you need a bigger camera now that Justin's coming in here because you need to compensate for his giant hog. Yeah. Um, how are we gonna top this? I don't know, I don't know, but um, it has been a pleasure. Like even these five weeks of just podcasting and just being ourselves, like we we can't really be real on commercial radio at all. It's like I'd just stop talking after seven o'clock, like for example. Like this is who we really are. And it's been heaps of fun, and we've enjoyed everyone that's come along for the little ride that we went on, but um, it's not the end. And it could be a podcast form that turns up again, like it's under the banner of ABC. Who knows? Maybe maybe I'll get my foot in the door enough to go, well, come on, over this way. You know, there's Hobart, there's you know, there's there's places for you in in the industry. You don't know, you don't know where life goes, but um, you'll forever be a part of my life, and I appreciate everything you've done for me over the last four and a half years.
